My First Pet

Instead of writing "what I did this summer" Devin wrote a story about getting a new dog. Here it is:

Intro

We didn't always have a pet. My name is Devin Rogel (Ro-g-ELL), and I was once afraid of dogs. This is the story of getting a pet. Her name is (drumroll please)... Bunny!

Chapter one: The Drive

So, it all started in the van. My family was there. Mom, Dad, Liam and me. We were having a discussion about what letters we saw on license plates and signs. Simultaneously, we played the alphabet game.

“A… A… did anyone see A?” I said. “There’s one! And B…”

“C!” said Dad.

“Found one!” me and Liam said at the same time.

“A C?” said Dad.

“Yeah,” said liam. I was too busy looking out my window finding D.

“D… oh! on that license plate!” I said. “E!” the license plate read: 6DE 340.

“You’re already on F?” Liam exclaimed.

“Lucky license plate, I guess,” I responded. “We’re at a red light. Search for as many letters as you can before the light turns green,”

Soon enough, though, the light turned green. We were all on F. “F, on that sign that went above us right there,” Dad said. We were still tied.

Chapter 2: At the shelter

When we drove into the parking lot of the shelter, Liam was ahead of me. Dad was behind.

“GUH 502 is not a helpful license plate when you are past one and are needing letters before the other two,” I said, looking at a license plate.

There was a dog barking. It was inside of a fence, but I didn’t dare go near it. We went into the building. There was a counter with computers on it and employees. They were talking. “That’ll be $150,” said one. another said, “They want Sugar.”

A new-looking employee said to us, “Yes?”

“Bunny,” Mom said. “We want Bunny.”

Another employee walked into the room.

“These people want to see Bunny,” the first employee said.

“Bunny?” the second employee said.

“Bunny,” the first employee said.

The second employee left the room. A few minutes later, she returned with a cute little chihuahua with short and black fur. Bunny’s eyes were brown and large on her tiny head. Her eyes had a little twinkle in them. She had some white fur on her belly and paws. And she was so nervous.

“She’s nervous around strangers, so it might take a little bit of time for her to like you,” the employee said as we walked down a hall. There were a LOT of dogs barking. Other than Bunny, who was too nervous to bark.

We walked into a room. There was an open closet of dog toys, food, and other supplies. Then, I spotted another room. There was a closed door on the opposite side of the room from us. It was Bunny’s little room. We walked in. There was a bed and stools to sit on. There were also some balls on the floor and a basket of some more.

“Give her to me,” Mom said.

“Okay,” said the employee.

Bunny was now in Mom’s hands.

Dad said that he was thinking he’d pet her, but that It was better for her to bond to Mom first. Mom agreed.

“Hey, Bunny Bunn,” Mom said. “It’s alright, we’re not gonna hurt you. You’re fine,”

Bunny was the most nervous out of all of us. She was QUIVERING in Mom's hands. “You can pet Her, Devin, you know,” Mom said. So I did.

“Hey, doggy, doggy, it’s alright,” I said. Ten minutes later, Bunny was On a slip leash and we were walking back down the hall.

“This way, Bunny,”Mom said. Bunny followed. We got back to the counter.

“Do you have a second? I need to give you some paperwork,” said another employee.

“Yeah,” Mom said.

The employee handed us some paperwork. We filled it in. While Dad was answering the questions on the paperwork, Me, Mom and Liam chatted. “I  hope we don’t have to send her back,” I said.

“Me, too, but don’t worry about it,” Mom said.

“Okay,” I said. I wasn't planning on returning Bunny ANY. Time. Soon.

Chapter 3: The Drive Back

Soon, we were done with the paperwork and were almost  ready to go home. The employee said we could keep the slip leash, and gave us some dog food. And Bunny’s license and file. And some other things that would go on bunny’s collar (once she GOT one), and then the employee told us that Bunny’s microchip was already implanted. THEN we were ready to go home. When we were at the van, Someone Was smoking.

So Mom opened Liam's door and told me to climb in. I did. Then, we fastened our seatbelts with Bunny on Mom’s lap, and drove away.

Conclusion

If you enjoyed this you may also enjoy the Magic is Hard series! I am now less afraid of dogs, and Bunny Barks at Dad. Bunny can be annoying, but otherwise, I LOVE having a dog, because Bunny is the absolute CUTEST and has soft, silky fur!
