Mini Landfills Experiment No. 9

Hello! Welcome to another installment of the Mini Landfills Experiment! I am Devin Rogel, but first I'm going to report that today, it was really cold. Brrrr! 

This is the control. We mixed it.

This is also the control. The sprout we ripped out of a nut is still alive! Somehow. We also noticed other types of small newborn plants.

This is the organics. We noticed plants in that one too. We added basically 1/3 cup of water to each.

This is a specific plant hiding in the organics. We don't know yet, but we think it's something from the food scraps such as broccoli or onions, but we can't identify it yet. It's still too young.

We even noticed plants in the trash bin!

Here's a closeup. The plants are hard to see, but they're there.

Mini Landfills Experiment No. 8

 Hello! Welcome to another installment of the Mini Landfills Experiment! This is Devin Rogel! Let's get started.

This is the control. We mixed it.

We also added no water. This was me testing the soil to check water levels.

This is the food scraps bin. This time, we noticed the egg shells.

Specifically, we noticed that the egg shells were brittle and weak.

This is the trash bin. We noticed that it was drier than the others. This confirms our suspicion of the trash stealing moisture.

Mini Landfills Update No. 7

Hello! Welcome to another update of the Mini Landfills Experiment! Today, we gave them 1/3 of a cup of water because they were still fairly wet. Then we watered the phlox with the extra water.

This is the control. We mixed it and added the water.

This is the food scraps. The onions have started getting more brown than they are pale, which is pretty exciting!

This is the trash one. 

There's rust! Or at least we think there is.

The root we found is even more moldy!

We actually noticed a singular tiny ball of Styrofoam! This is our first sign of trash breaking down.

 

Mini Landfills Experiment No. 6

 FINALLY, we're all caught up! This time, we didn't add any water because it was still wet! For those who don't know, I am Devin Rogel with another installment of the Mini Landfills Experiment!

Here, I am mixing the control and poking around for any more mold.

Here, I'm doing the same with the food scraps bin.

And here is the trash bin. We noticed some mold on a root! We think that this means that the trash group takes a lot longer to decompose- even when that item is not the trash itself- because the trash sucks up water, or at least the spongey things do, like cloth or styrofoam.

Mini Landfills Experiment No. 5

Welcome to another update of Mini Landfills Experiment! I am Devin Rogel and catching you up on March ninth! On that day, we added a third of a cup of water to each because they were still damp.

Here are some pictures of all of them and me mixing the control.

Here's the exciting part- EVEN MORE MOLD!!! Also, I managed to pull a sprout out of a broken nut! Isn't that just crazy? And all of this in the control!

MORE MOLD! OH so much more mold! We also even found a bit of trash in the soil! Such sneaky little trash. It isn't supposed to be in the food scrap bin!

And then here's the trash bin. Even this bin has exciting news- rust on the metal! We noticed that there was no mold even on the roots and leaves, and the soil was dry, so we hypothesized that the trash was sucking up moisture. This has been an exciting new update of the Mini Landfills Experiment! Devin Rogel, signing out.

Mini Landfills Experiment No. 4

Hello again, my name is Devin Rogel and welcome to another Mini Landfills Update! Sadly, we got behind and had to make this much later than March second, which is when we checked.

This is the control. We added 2/3 of a cup to each this time. 

Here are the food scraps. We also mixed each one evenly.

Here's the trash tub.

All of them were dry, with no progress with the mold. This has been an update of the Mini Landfills Experiment! See you soon with another update and hopefully more mold!

 

Mini Landfills Experiment Update 3

 Hello again, Devin Rogel here with the third installment of the Mini Landfills Experiment, where we have some very exciting news!

Here we have the trash one, mostly dry with no signs of biodegrading.

Here we have the food scraps, being mixed up. The food scrap bin was also dry, so we added water. We added 4 oz to each.

Here comes the good news: (drumroll please...) our first signs of mold in the food scraps! mold is the first step in decomposition, where mold and bacteria arrive and start to eat away at the material.

Here's a close-up of the mold. You can't see it, but the stick is pointing to a tiny scrap with blue mold on it! Soon the mold will make its rounds through the entire bin.

Here is the control; not much changed, and so we mixed and watered it.

Mini Landfills Experiment Update 2

Hello, I am Devin Rogel, and today we will discuss the second update on the Mini Landfills Experiment.

We watered and mixed all three of them, putting four ounces into every bin.

This is the control. No signs of decomposing yet. It was fairly dry.

Here's me mixing the food scraps. It was also dry, and still didn't have any signs of decomposing.

And here is me mixing the trash bin. It had no signs of decomposing.

This is the results of our Mini Landfills Experiment Update 2. No signs of decomposing in any of them, but we think there may be next time. See you next Friday with another update!
