Yesterday was Allen's last curling event of the season. Curling, if you've never had the pleasure of witnessing it, is a sport involving pushing large granite rocks down a sheet of ice towards some concentric circles. Sort of like shuffle board on ice. It's a team sport. It was invented by Scottish people and while drinking is not actually part of the game it seems to be an important aspect of the sport - not that Allen plays for that reason!
Since Allen was gong to be gone most of the day and I thought I might need the car I decided to get ready in time to not only drop him off, but also go in so that Liam could see first hand what curling is all about. He was pretty excited about the surprise - in the car on the way there. I think that the ice arena, which was pretty busy with ice skaters, and the curling area, which was populated with people who were very friendly but he had never met before, was a little intimidating for Liam. He was pretty happy to hold my hand most of the time.
He stepped out on the ice briefly with Allen. No slipping. Allen's holding a "broom" which is used during the game to "sweep" or rub the ice in an effort to change the direction or speed of the rock as it moves.
Here Liam is watching from the viewing area. He pretty quickly decided that watching rocks slide back and forth across the ice wasn't actually too interesting. He did get to eat a doughnut, though. Tim Horton's, which he said was better than the ones he gets at church.
Here Allen is getting "down in the hack," ready to throw a rock. It's a little tricky to get good shots of the game, actually.
Liam also found out, from another member of the league, that a welding shop in a nearby town has a real truck that's the same model as "Mater" from the movie "Cars" and has been fixed up to look like him. Liam was very disappointed that we didn't go and find this treasure that very same day. Instead we went home and Liam played Nick Jr. games and did puzzles while I crashed on the couch. We ended up combining picking up Allen with a trip to the grocery store.
