Seeing the Baby

We had the second ultrasound today.  It was scheduled for 9:45.  In the automated reminder message they said they were rolling out a new computer system so we should come in 15 minutes early.  But they said that last time, so we figured we were already in the system and arrived on time.  Or early depending on how you view the time we spent waiting.  Liam and Allen had lots of time to read together.  The time stamp on this picture says it was taken at 10:01.

Finally, at almost 10:30 they called us back - but just to take my vitals and have me pee in a cup.  Liam thought it was pretty funny that they were doing the same stuff to me that they do at the beginning of his appointments.  He thought those were "kid" things.  He took the picture below.

Finally, 11:11.  Hear we are waiting for the ultrasound tech. (See picture below)  The ultrasound went fine.  As we thought it would the placenta has moved up into a better location.  The baby was laying with his back to the front, so we didn't really get any glamor shots.  Actually, she forgot to print anything out for us, so we don't have any new shots at all.  I thought we were done with ultrasounds, but she said they usually order another "routine" one at 32 weeks.  I declined.  It's weird because my actual care providers are at a different practice.  I don't think they intend for me to have another one.

Liam was prepared for the quality of the pictures, having seen the stills from the first one.  He was interested especially when they added color-coded blood flow and we could see the baby's heart beating.  After a while, though, he was happy to be a rain or possibly a hail cloud.

After all that I needed to go to another part of the hospital to have some lab work done.  Thankfully, when getting my vitals done for the ultrasound I had realized that one of the tests they wanted to do was the glucose tolerance test - which involves drinking a drink made up of high fructose corn syrup (which makes me sick) and waiting an hour.  I called the OB office and they said to just skip it for now.  (I believe I skipped it altogether when I was pregnant with Liam with no ill effects.)

So then we had to go upstairs so I could get a shot.  Since I have "negative" blood and Allen has positive they give a shot to protect the baby in case he has positive blood and his blood and mine mix somehow.  This is when the "new computer system" really threw a kink into things.  The nurse thought it might take an hour to get us into the system (even thought we'd been at the hospital for how many hours already...) and then she would have to order the medicine.  It took more than an hour.  The picture above was taken at 1:13.  We left the hospital about 2:30.

And headed to the nearest Wendy's.  Which is very possibly the one with the worst service in the greater metropolis area.  We've been there before because it's on the way.  I was nervous when I started to order because the girl just stands there and doesn't press buttons and I know she's not going to remember what I'm saying.  "Plain baked potato with butter and sour cream" seems pretty clear to me, but when they are putting the food on the tray they ask Allen "do you want butter and sour cream?"  He says, "Yes" but they don't give it to him.  I go up and ask and they say "We asked but he said he didn't want it."  I was not standing at the counter when they asked, but I know he said yes and....Oh forget it.

By the time we got home Liam was so sleepy he actually protested getting out of the car because he said his car seat was "comfy."  Allen still had to go into school for a few hours.  It's finals week and he needs to get his grades in.  I'm so thankful he has a flexible schedule!
